October Month of Alabama Food

Press Conference

Capital City Club, Montgomery, AL

 

 

On Monday, September 29, 2008 the Alabama Grocers Association sponsored a press conference to kick-off the October Month of Alabama Food at the Capital City Club in Montgomery, Alabama.

Mrs. Ellie Taylor, President of the Alabama Grocers Association welcomed all the attendees and thanked them for their support of the Buy Alabama's Best Program.

Mr. Mike Fuller, Owner of Fuller's Supermarket and Chairman of the Alabama Grocers Association addressed those in attendance and on behalf of the Retail Community committed to helping the program succeed.

Mr. Bobby Bright, Mayor of Montgomery welcomed everyone to the city of Montgomery and thanked them for their attendance.

Mr. John Curry Key, International Trade and Market Development, State of Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries addressed those in attendance and thanked everyone for there support of the October Month of Alabama Food on behalf of Commissioner Ron Sparks and the Department of Agriculture & Industries. 

 

Several Legislators were in attendance including; Representative James Fields, Alabama House of Representatives District 12; Representative Mac Gipson, Alabama House of Representatives District 88; Representative Ronald Grantland, Alabama House of Representatives District 9; Representative Jay Love, Alabama House of Representatives District 74; and Representative Pebblin Warren, Alabama House of Representatives District 82.

Representative Jay Love addressed those in attendance and read a letter from Senator Larry Dixon.

Ms. Virginia Whitfield, Whitfield Foods addressed those in attendance and read a letter on behalf of Governor Bob Riley.

Mr. John D. Fox, Jr., C&M Food Distributing addressed those in attendance and read a letter on behalf of Senator Jabo Waggoner, Alabama Senate Minority Leader District 16.

Mr. Johnny Collins of Barber Dairies, President of the Alabama Food Manufacturers and Producers Association addressed those in attendance and thanked them for their support of the Buy Alabama's Best Program. He stated that he would like this program to become a "lifestyle" here in Alabama.

Mr. Dan Sims, Founder of the Janie Sims Children's Foundation addressed those in attendance and thanked them for all of the support the Buy Alabama's Best has shown the Janie Sims Children's Foundation and allowing him to be apart of this program again this year. To date, our efforts have raised over $100,000 to fight pediatric cancer.

Mr. Lee Sentell, Director, Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel addressed those in attendance and talked about how the program got started in 2005 and how important it is to support these companies right here in the state of Alabama particularly in these tough economic times. 

 

With the Press Conference adjourned, Ellie Taylor, President of the Alabama Grocers Association invited all of those present to enjoy a buffet of some of the Alabama products.

This press conference was to kick-off the October Month of Alabama Food. The Buy Alabama's Best program is made up of the Alabama Grocers Association, the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries and the Alabama Food Manufacturers and Producers Association. 

 

Starting this Sunday, October 5th there will be coupons in the Sunday paper for select Alabama Products. Coupons will feature, Governor & Mrs. Riley; Commissioner Ron Sparks; Alabama chefs Clayton Sherrod & Frank Stitt; Evander Holyfield, four-time Heavyweight Campion of the World; and Alabama's own Miss Deidre Downs, 2005 Miss America. 

 

Grocery retailers were encouraged to display signage that was sent out (which is pictured below) in their stores so that consumers will know which products are made, manufactured and produced here in the State of Alabama. A portion of the proceeds from the October Month of Alabama Food will go to benefit the Janie Sims Children's Foundation. This Foundation is a non-profit Organization dedicated to helping children with cancer and their families and is committed to supporting and funding research toward a cure for pediatric cancer. All of the month from this Foundation stays here in Alabama through the Children's Hospital.
